Mormon Grader railroad worker colored enamel pin.

As the Union Pacific (UP) and Central Pacific (CP) raced to complete the transcontinental railroad both contracted through President Brigham Young, for thousands of Mormon laborers to build railroad grade (creating a platform, cutting, filling, tunneling and bridge building), so other CP and UP workers could thereafter finish the grading and lay track. Mormon contractors worked from Wells, Nevada to the Wyoming-Utah border. Mormon workers helped bring the two roads together at Promontory Summit, putting Utah on the map. The transcontinental railroad spurred development and innovation across Utah and helped Utah to become the great crossroads of the west.
